Staff Character for Museum of American History
Full Name: Toris Lorinaitis
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Hometown: Outside of Prienai, Lithuania
Personality: Worrywart. It’s a phrase that Toris hears often enough, and it’s probably the best way to describe him. He is constantly worrying over the wellbeing of others after all, especially those who he considers to be close to him, putting their welfare before his own. Because of this it isn’t rare to see Toris fretting over this or that, making sure that everyone around him is as happy. He’s also very easy to embarrass, feeling that there’s a certain way that he should act and gets flustered easily when pushed outside of this norm.
That doesn’t mean that Toris is an unhappy soul. On the contrary, he tries to stay positive and make the best out of whatever situation that he’s in, as well as make things better for those around him. True smiles might be rare, but Toris tries as hard as he can. Feelings about his own wellbeing, or whether he is uncomfortable or not, are often bottled up inside and pushed down and away. It can lead to a few passive aggressive outbursts here and there, but on the whole, Toris is very welcoming to people, once he begins to know them.
Unfortunately, keeping at least a slightly positive façade and constant worrying are draining on the Lithuanian. Taking on too much work at once because he made the mistake of saying “I’m fine.” can often lead to exhaustion. If the exhaustion doesn’t catch up to Toris, then his stomach will twist itself into so many knots, it might be considered a medical miracle. Luckily, Toris has taken to medicine well and keeps a container of stomach ache pills for just the occasion.
Job: Janitor
Job History: Toris grew up outside of Prienai where his small family worked on a rye farm. Work more or less became what his parents asked of him. He was fine with working in the fields, though his rather thin frame was poorly suited to a farming life. His father only allowed him to work outside when they didn’t have enough hands and it was absolutely necessary. So instead he learned how to cook and clean from his mother and helped more around the house than with actual work. It was a quiet life and Toris was content with it until his father died.
Things were unstable for a time but his mother eventually found work closer in the city and out of the farm, cleaning houses while Toris did everything he could to try and help but jobs with good pay were becoming rare if one didn’t have a college degree. He didn’t want to be a strain on his mother’s already limited resources. So Toris saved up what he could, bought a plane ticket and went to America for schooling so that he could come back with a higher degree, maybe a doctor, and help out what was left of his family. There was only one problem that Toris did not foresee in his plans.
American schooling was expensive.
He enrolled in a school in New York and took out loans to pay for the tuition, unwilling to write back home and ask for anything. But he needed a way to pay those loans back. Unfortunately, a college degree was needed for many of the jobs, just as it was becoming back home. Finally he found one job that would take him and wouldn’t require excessively long hours while he took night classes. Thus, he became a janitor in Musee des Merveilles. He mainly works in the Museum of American History, since the students who do research in its halls aren’t exactly the neatest.
Fears: – Returning home empty handed
- Having to ask for help
- Being unable to help others
Other: Toris enjoys cooking more than he enjoys cleaning but because of an unfortunate incident involving a pink frilly apron, Toris only cooks for close friends to preserve his (nonexistent) masculinity. He also really appreciates swords and martial arts.
